The study is to undertake a National Waste Characterization exercise in Zambia. The aim is to conduct an in-depth assessment of the waste and e-waste material flows, characteristics, and existing waste management practices and trends across major towns and cities. This initiative, led by the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) and supported by the World Bank, seeks to provide essential background material and strategic guidance for a roadmap toward sustainable waste and e-waste management in the country.
The study focuses on achieving a comprehensive understanding of the policy, legal, and institutional frameworks, identifying any gaps and barriers to sustainable waste management, and highlighting areas needing policy intervention. It also aims to provide baseline information necessary for the development of detailed city-specific Waste Management Action Plans for the surveyed districts. These plans will serve as templates for other districts, aiming to standardize and improve waste management practices nationwide.
Key tasks of the consultancy include conducting a Desk Review - gathering and analyzing secondary data, identifying gaps, and preparing assessment reports. Additionally, the consultancy is responsible for performing a Baseline Study and Waste Characterization, identifying waste hotspots, and conducting waste characterization studies and empirical studies for mapping waste value chains. The project also includes a Capacity Building and Training Programme to enhance local expertise in waste management, ensuring the sustainability of efforts and practices implemented.
