From September 2020 to September 2021, our consultancy undertook a comprehensive audit and strategic evaluation of Alternative Livelihood Programmes (ALPs) in selected mining communities across Ghana. Commissioned by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources in collaboration with the World Bank, this assignment aimed to assess the economic and social benefits of ALPs for key stakeholders, including artisanal and small-scale miners (ASMs), farmers, landowners, chiefs, and vulnerable groups. The study was designed to align with global best practices and address current challenges in the minerals and mining industry.
Our approach involved extensive fieldwork and stakeholder engagement to ensure data-driven insights and practical recommendations. We identified key stakeholders and relevant communities, conducted field visits, and collaborated with District Mining Committees to understand the realities on the ground. Through an in-depth evaluation, we assessed the strengths and weaknesses of existing ALP initiatives, identified viable alternative economic activities, and conducted a SWOT analysis to uncover opportunities for sustainable livelihood development. Furthermore, we examined the number of individuals that could be engaged in these programmes, explored potential funding mechanisms, and identified key hurdles that could impact adoption.
To provide a strategic roadmap for improvement, we conducted a gap analysis study to highlight areas requiring intervention. Additionally, we organized stakeholder workshops to foster collaboration and consensus-building among relevant parties. The consultancy culminated in the preparation of detailed reports, outlining actionable recommendations for optimizing ALP implementation and enhancing long-term community prosperity. By empowering communities, diversifying economic opportunities, and building resilience, our work contributed to sustainable development in mining regions, ensuring that local populations can transition toward more stable and rewarding livelihoods beyond mining.
