Gambia Agriculture Transformation Programme

Transforming Gambia’s Agriculture for Sustainable Growth
2025

We developed the Gambia Agriculture Transformation Programme (ATP), a visionary initiative launched by the Republic of Gambia with funding from the African Development Bank under the Ministry of Agriculture. Our comprehensive approach focused on unlocking the full potential of the agriculture sector, driving economic growth, enhancing food security, and reducing reliance on imports through a strategic, market-driven framework.

At the heart of transformation program were nine key action areas designed to revolutionize Gambia’s agricultural landscape. We designed strategies to increase agricultural production and productivity, streamline the distribution of high-quality inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides, and scale up modern agricultural technology across the value chain. We developed smallholder commercialization models, strengthened financial inclusion by supporting the creation of a dedicated rural and agricultural bank, and integrated climate change resilience measures into every aspect of the program. Additionally, we established a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation (M&E) framework, designed an investment roadmap for agricultural infrastructure, and a program to built institutional capacity to ensure long-term success.

We spearheaded private sector engagement by conducting in-depth market and economic analyses, identifying investment opportunities, and developing strategic Public-Private Partnership (PPP) models to drive agribusiness growth. Our expertise extended to agricultural value chain financing, where we defined innovative financing models, assessed existing financial barriers, and formulated policy-driven solutions to optimize funding mechanisms for the agriculture sector.

Beyond financial structuring, we developed a comprehensive strategic plan for crop and livestock value chains, identifying high-yield crops, analyzing market access constraints, and recommending sustainable mechanization policies for poultry and small ruminants. Recognizing the critical role of youth in the sector, we also conducted a detailed assessment of youth engagement in agribusiness, evaluated existing initiatives, and designed actionable strategies to attract young entrepreneurs into agriculture.

The transformation program is not just a roadmap - it is a catalyst for long-term agricultural growth and sustainability in Gambia. By combining strategic investments, cutting-edge technology, and inclusive policies, we have laid the foundation for a thriving, resilient, and globally competitive agriculture sector. The future of Gambia’s agriculture is here, and we have built the path to success!
